MMA Goes to Reza Monfaradi Seminar
- Apr, 28 , 16
- Maida Barrientos
Brazilian Jiujitsu was introduced to me by my brother Marvin So Martillano 2 years ago. My initial thinking was, I'm just doing it for the health benefits. Today, 2 years later and 2 stripes more on my white belt, I can say I'm a passionate student.
At 42 years old, yep, I'm 42, and this is where you say (ahhh hindi halata - joke), but yeah, me, my hubby and my son, enjoy grueling exercises and drills because of our love for the sport. Its not something that actually comes naturally to me and to have that mental notion that you can be hurt during drills, which I experienced just last week, is something most women would not go for but I LOVE IT. Besides equipping me with skills and techniques non practicing people would know, it allows me to actually bond with my son and my hubby and my brother and pamangkin Max who is I think would be the one to watch out for 5 years or so from now.
A year ago, my brother created or put up Martillano Martial Arts Gym, which is one of the two gyms in the Philippines affiliated with Reza Monfaradi Martial Arts Center in Bahrain, an affiliate of Alliance, the number 1 Jiu-Jitsu team in the world.
A year later and 25 students more, we all decided to go on a trip to Legazpi for Reza's yearly workshop. AND THEN history happened. Most of the students got promoted, my family included and I, got the shock of my life, when I was promoted to 2 stripes when I was only expecting 1. That piece of sports tape that gripped my white belt might not be worth anything to you but for me, its priceless. PRICELESS.
